Social Media and Website Guidelines for External Tutors

As we all know, the manner in which people are viewing information online has changed dramatically in the last couple of years.

The various social media platforms are an exciting way for us to bring attention to the workshops and projects that we run. However, the way in which information is disseminated online has significant implications for copyright.

It is therefore helpful for everyone concerned that we have firm guidelines to follow when it comes to posting material online in order to avoid prosecution for infringement of copyright or a situation where Ornamental Embroidery is rendered in breach of contract with a collaborating institution.

Accordingly:

  • In circumstances where Ornamental Embroidery has been given permission by an institution to use source material from its collections, either through direct copy or as inspiration for workshops, kits, lectures, etc., devised in collaboration with an external tutor, such material must be fully acknowledged every time when posting images online, using either a) the preferred wording of the institution, or b) “Image reproduced by kind permission of [name of institution]”. Permission to use this material will have been given solely to Ornamental Embroidery for a specific use, agreed in writing in advance with the relevant institution, and not to external tutors. It is therefore essential that tutors seek permission from Ornamental Embroidery to post this material. Ornamental Embroidery disclaims liability for the use of any images on third party websites and social media platforms, permission for which has not been obtained in advance.

  • Similarly, the copyright in any designs, kits or other materials produced for an event, which are either a direct copy or inspired by source material from an institution, remains the property of that institution. No kits may be sold once a workshop is completed without the express permission of the institution.

  • In relation to workshops/projects run under the umbrella of Ornamental Embroidery, when posting material on social media pages, please acknowledge Ornamental Embroidery in the body of the text, using the following handles: Twitter - @oestitch; Instagram - @ornamentalembroidery.  Reference to Ornamental Embroidery by using a # is not sufficient as a hashtag is a generic expression. The @ must be used to identify Ornamental Embroidery correctly.
